DevExpress Document Server – Automate Office Without Microsoft Office Automation
DevExpress Document Server – A couple of years ago (long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away) I had to take over a project from a developer that had left the company I worked for. Unfortunately, she left in the middle of an implementation. The application was developed and installed, but there were many change requests and I had to develop these change requests into working solutions.
One of the biggest headaches was the fact that the application did some really funky Office Word manipulation. So much so that when the company upgraded to a newer version of Office, it broke many of the installed application features. More recently though we needed to give a customer the ability to export data to Excel. The only catch was that the customer wasn’t going to install Microsoft Office.
We could obviously not use Microsoft Office automation and DevExpress Document Server is a perfect solution for times like these. (more…)
Office Excel 2013 – The Quick Access Toolbar, Your Way
I consider myself rather proficient with using a PC. In fact, I think that I take many of the features of the operating system and other applications rather for granted. Every once in a while, I slow down just long enough to notice something new.
Every day, I try to go through a few articles from some of my favourite bloggers of tech and just sit and absorb what they are writing about. It is during moments such as these that I usually learn something new. The following tip is (I am almost ashamed to say this) something I never knew, or took notice of.

Use Bing Maps in Office Excel 2013
I quickly wanted to share a nice trick I learned today in Excel 2013. As we all know, visualizing data trumps any text representation hands down. In programming, when we as developers can create useful dashboards we give our applications a definite edge above other competing apps out there. It is no wonder that Excel is so good at charting and visualizing data.
To illustrate this nice trick, open up Office Excel 2013 and enter some random City Names in column A, and dummy sales figures for each city in Column B.
